Local students learn the benefits of going green

Local students learn the benefits of going green Students from Millfield Preparatory School have spent the last week visiting Crest Nicholson’s ICON development in Street, to find out more about how houses can be built sustainably and the features that are being used to help homeowners save energy for years to come.

The 48 students, who are in year eight, received a tour of the development, which has been expertly designed to give pedestrians and cyclists precedence over cars and other vehicles. While on the tour the group enjoyed a detailed talk by Crest Nicholson site manager, John Gray, and were shown how the materials used to construct the buildings help to insulate the homes efficiently and reduce energy bills.

John said: “It was great to see the students so interested in the build process and the sustainable practices that we’ve employed. All of the children were a pleasure to have on the site and I was impressed by their interest in helping the environment in every way possible, especially through how this can be done in the home.

“Crest Nicholson is committed to building sustainable communities and the ICON development is a great example of how new homes can be built which make the most of environmentally friendly features. These features will be of financial benefit to all future ICON homeowners as well as helping them do their bit for the environment.”

Cathy Papworth, Head of Geography and Co-ordinator of Green Matters at Millfield Preparatory School said: “This was an ideal opportunity for our pupils to see sustainable design in practice and to support what they have been doing in the classroom.”

These visits form part of a larger project that Crest Nicholson is helping the pupils to complete, looking at environmentally friendly buildings and how sustainability can be implemented in the home.

The first phase of the ICON development consists of 138 one and two bedroom apartments and two, three and four-bedroom homes, with prices now starting from £142,463 for a three bedroom home when bought under the EasyBuy scheme.
