Direct Line: Dangerous driving measures

20th November 2008 Print
Direct Line responds to new dangerous driving measures announced in Transport Minister Jim Fitzpatrick's Road Safety Consultation.

Spokesperson for Direct Line, Frances Browning, says, "Direct Line welcomes the new proposals to help the police tackle drink and drug driving and to penalise motorists who excessively break the speed limit. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and speeding are two major causes of traffic accidents which leave thousands of Britons counting the costs of dangerous driving each year. Our own in-depth study into driving behaviours, in conjunction with TRL (Transport Research Laboratory), found 80 per cent of motorists break the speed limit when driving under normal conditions on typical urban roads, suggesting that speeding is rife across the country. We believe that heavy penalties are needed to deter speeding on our roads and promote responsible driving amongst UK motorists."
