From the barracks to a new home

18th March 2008 Print
From the barracks to a new home Former army radio operator, Peter Tingle, has started his march up the property ladder and reserved one of Redrow’s award-winning Debut properties in Selby.

After 14 years in the British Forces, including overseas postings to Germany, Bosnia, the Falkland Islands and Cyprus, Peter, 30, decided his next mission was to hang up his boots, settle in his own territory and find a place to call home.

Just as key workers like police, fire fighters and nurses struggle to get a foothold on the property ladder in the areas where they live and work, so too serving forces personnel often find it hard to afford their first home on ‘civvy street’.

Peter says: “People in the serving forces do find it so hard to get onto the property ladder due to the extensive travelling and never being posted in a place for more than three years…it proves to be a mission in itself!”

Impressed with the new homes and low prices, Peter, who left the army last summer and now works as a vending operator, picked Redrow’s Debut @ Selby development as his future base.

He says: “After years of travelling from country to country I decided it was time to relax and stay put in one place. My parents moved to Selby from Middlesbrough and, wanting to be near them, I started looking for a home in the area.

“I chose to reserve a property at the Debut @ Selby development as it had everything I was looking for – a brand new home at a very affordable price.”

Peter, who currently lives with his parents, is looking forward to moving into his one-bedroom ‘D1’ style home complete with an open-plan living area, when it is completed in the summer.

He adds: “Although it will be lovely to relax in my own space, I hope buying a Debut property will prove to be a good investment and also allow me to progress up the property ladder.”

As it was Peter’s first experience of purchasing a home he was given lots of friendly advice by Redrow, who pointed him in the right direction to find the best mortgage deal.

Giselle Ledgard, area sales manager at Redrow Homes (Yorkshire) says: “The brand new properties at Debut @ Selby offer energy efficiency in an affordable and easy to manage home to suit modern busy lifestyles.

“Unlike some of the older second hand stock in the town, there will be no repairs or costly renovations to worry about, no living with someone else’s decorating disasters and no external maintenance like pointing or re-roofing to drain the budget. Purchasers can simply move in and get on with enjoying life in their very own home.”

Redrow’s Debut @ Selby is a range of affordable one and two-bedroom homes targeted primarily at first time buyers.

As well as low prices, customers are offered the chance to defer 10% of the initial purchase price for up to 10 years, interest free; and there’s also a single monthly service charge that covers gas, electric and water bills as well as external maintenance and building insurance. All of this is designed to make owning a brand new home more affordable and easier to manage.

The contemporary style of the properties lends itself to younger first-time buyers and to those in need of a fresh start, and the unique design sets them apart from many other homes currently on the market.

Much of the cost-saving comes from the way in which the properties are constructed, using a lightweight structural steel frame and other modern methods of construction, which speeds up the build programme without compromising on quality.

Communal heating and hot water systems also provide cost efficiencies, while replacing private gardens with shared high quality landscaped outdoor space, maintained by Redrow’s own management company, engenders a sense of community.

Debut @ Selby, situated on Holme Lane, is set within walking distance of Selby, where there is a wide range of shops, restaurants, pubs, night clubs and health facilities on the doorstep.

The development offers the very latest one and two-bedroom Debut properties. A one-bedroom home is currently priced from £65,999 (or just £56,999 if they opt to use the easi-buy) and a two-bedroom property can be purchased from, £109,999 (or £93,499 with the easi-buy option).
