Teachers give top marks to Barratt school conversion

Two former teachers and a pupil have awarded top marks to Barratt York for the redevelopment of Bridlington Lower School into new homes. Head teacher John Hilditch, science teacher John Blythe and Jean Peacock, a pupil at the school between 1951 and 1956, visited the newly refurbished Old Masters House at Barratt's Bayside development on St Johns Street.

The Old Masters House has been converted into apartments and is complemented by two new apartment blocks in the architectural style inspired by the school.

Jean, who is the archivist for the Bridlington High School Old Girls Association, has provided copies of several photographs of the school and its former pupils, which are now on display in the corridors and communal areas within the development. She said: "The selection of photographs date back to 1905, when the original school was formed and it's wonderful that they are now accessible for the new residents to enjoy. I'm thrilled to bits with how sympathetically the building has been converted - it's been very tastefully done."

Key Stage 3 Co-ordinator and science teacher John Blythe, 64, taught at the school for 35 years, until it closed in 2002. He said: "The apartments are excellent and I believe someone's kitchen is now on the site of my old science lab! I am really impressed with how well the property has been converted - it is so light and airy. The front of the school has been totally renovated to its former glory and I must congratulate Barratt for that."
