Medical pioneer's former home goes on the market
Carter Jonas is selling the former North Yorkshire home of medical pioneer Sir Sydney Ringer. Ringer, who is credited with inventing one of medicine’s most important breakthroughs – the saline drip – lived his final days in the village of Lastingham on the North York Moors.During his distinguished professional life, St Mary’s in Lastingham was his holiday and weekend retreat but it became his retirement. It was here that he lived until his death in 1910.
Edward Stoyle, Partner and Head of Residential Sales at Carter Jonas’ York office, is handling the sale. He commented: “Dr Ringer was an integral part of St Mary’s Church congregation and his name can still be found inscribed on the stained glass windows following its restoration in 1879. He was clearly inspired by all things ecclesiastical as his home features ornate carved panelling, an oak staircase and church pews.”
There are four good sized bedrooms with the potential to convert the large dressing area into a fifth. The grounds extend to approximately 5.5 acres including a pretty woodland walk and stream.
Sir Sydney Ringer is buried in the churchyard of St Mary’s, from which the property gets its name, together with his wife Anne and elder daughter Annie.
