Save our red squirrels

5th February 2009 Print
A new 10-mile circular walk to a view point for watching England's native red squirrel has just been opened by the Yorkshire Dales National Park in woodland at Snaizeholm, near Hawes.

The special viewing area is in the heart of the Widdale Red Squirrel Reserve - created to give people the chance to see one of our most threatened species in their natural habitat - where our favourite redheads appear to be thriving.

The trail starts and finishes at the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes and an audio trail can be downloaded onto MP3 players at yorkshiredales.org.uk/snaizeholme-red-squirrel-trail along with route notes and a map.

Stay close by with Yorkshire Cottages which features a wide range of properties in and around the bustling market town of Hawes including 1 South View in the peaceful Wensleydale village of Burtersett which has walks direct from the door such as a flagged pathway across the fields to Hawes, just a mile and a half away.

The two-bedroom centrally-heated property sleeps four - plus a dog at no extra charge - and boasts Yorkshire flagstone floors downstairs, an open fire, plus a multifuel stove, electric range-style cooker and Belfast sink in the kitchen, and polished wooden floorboards in the bedrooms.

Three-night short breaks start at £220 or for a week in March the cost is just £280, including all fuel.
