Weather puts skids under motorists
With the Met Office forecasting a colder end to this year than last, specialist insurer for the over 50s, RIAS, is warning motorists to take a few precautions before setting out on journeys this autumn and winter."Department of Transport statistics show that almost half of all winter road accidents are caused by skidding," says RIAS Managing Director Janet Connor, "and sudden braking in cold weather is one of the greatest causes. Ice on the roads, tyres hardened by lower temperatures, and a general lack of awareness in most drivers about how to correctly handle a skid, all add to the danger on Britain's roads in cold conditions. But there a number of precautions sensible drivers can take to reduce the chance of skidding and prevent accidents."
According to RIAS there are a number of practical things drivers can do:
Check your brakes - make sure they are in good condition and that there is sufficient brake fluid
Make sure there is plenty of fuel for the journey, and that tyre condition and pressure are both correct
Always make sure the windscreen is clean and clear, and that there is plenty of screenwash
Allow extra time for journeys - try to avoid rushing
If there is snow and ice, use high gears to reduce the need for sudden deceleration or acceleration
Don't get too close to the car in front
If you run into difficulty, stay with the car until help arrives - always take a mobile phone with you in case of emergencies
It can also be a good idea to avoid morning and afternoon rush hours. Driving in the dark should also be avoided whenever possible, as the number of accidents increases in lower light levels. Drivers with below average eyesight who rely on good light levels are particularly at risk.
