Students from Cardinal Newman School, Lea Manor High School and Lealands High School, took a break from the regular curriculum to spend an afternoon at Persimmon Homes’ Woodlands Park development in North Brickhill, Bedford.

Site manager Mick Butler provided the 15-16 year olds with a thorough introduction to the construction industry, including a comprehensive tour of Woodlands Park encompassing all aspects of the house building process, from creating foundations through to house completion and the sales process.

“We regularly encourage site visits to our developments across the Midlands region in order to provide visitors of all ages with an insight into the house building process,” commented Don Mason, construction director for Persimmon Homes Midlands. “We were particularly delighted to host these students at a time when they will be considering higher education and their future professions. The construction industry offers an extremely diverse choice of career paths from architecture to surveying to carpentry.

“School leavers aged 16 and upwards can assume apprenticeships with us and train for a qualified profession on the job, whilst those who pursue a university degree can fast track their way to a senior position via our Management Development Programme.

“All of the students who visited Woodlands Park were thoroughly enthused throughout their tour of the site and we hope it has encouraged them to further explore the fantastic opportunities available within our exciting industry.”

Almost 2 million people in the UK work in construction, over 200,000 of whom are women – proving the industry offers far more than just jobs for the boys! Persimmon Homes Midlands employs ten apprentices per year, many of whom have progressed through the company to assume senior managerial positions. Indeed, Persimmon’s Group Chairman, John White, began his own career as an apprentice bricklayer.

At Woodlands Park, Persimmon Homes is currently constructing a host of stunning three, four and five bedroom houses which once completed will create thriving new community of some 500 homes. Showcasing the choice of homes available, two stunning show homes are now open daily to view. The Oak and the Yew demonstrate a traditional four bedroom detached home and more contemporary five bedroom, three storey townhouse property.
