Persimmon donation boosts cathedral fund

Persimmon donation boosts cathedral fund As one of the UK’s leading house builders, Persimmon understands that buildings alone do not make homes and that new residential developments truly come to life once they establish their own communities. As soon as building work started on the Hamilton Grange development is Worcester, Persimmon laid foundations for a new community by teaming up with the site’s impressive neighbour – Worcester Cathedral.

Today Chris Walker, managing director of Persimmon Homes South Midlands, cemented the relationship with the city’s greatest landmark in the presence of The Very Reverend Peter Atkinson, Dean of Worcester, by offering a donation to the Worcester Cathedral’s Music Appeal.

To mark its commitment to the city, Persimmon donated £100 for each plot built at Hamilton Grange towards the construction of a new organ, amounting to over £6,000. The sum will help the cathedral reach its ambitious target of £5 million to ensure the city’s musical heritage continues into the future.

Chris Walker commented: “Building new developments presents us with an opportunity to shape the future of towns and cities and improve communities by constructing good quality new homes that people enjoy living in. This is particularly relevant in Worcester where we have a site in the heart of the city. Our donation will help ensure that both the cathedral and its choir continue to flourish, enriching the life of the local community, including the residents of Hamilton Grange.”

Les West, chief administrator officer at Worcester Cathedral, commented: “We are grateful to have received support from Persimmon. We value its commitment to the residents of Worcester who are great supporters of the cathedral and the choir.

“Raising £5 million is a big challenge and we are working round the clock to meet our £450,000 target set for March 2008. We hope that other businesses and individuals will follow Persimmon’s example and help us achieve our goal.”

Hamilton Grange has been named after Earl Hamilton who led a courageous attack on the Roundheads in the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Hamilton suffered fatal wounds in the attack and was buried in Worcester Cathedral.
