More Th>n first insurer to launch eco-car discount

22nd May 2006 Print
Hybrid car drivers can now benefit from a discount off their motor insurance in a new move by MORE TH>N designed to reward environmentally-friendly driving. The leading motor insurer has announced that it will reduce premiums for existing hybrid customers and offer a discount to new customers with hybrid vehicles.

The announcement comes as MORE TH>N releases new research revealing that:

Seven out of ten Brits would consider switching to an hybrid car if they were cheaper to run than normal cars

Over half (60%) would consider switching if there was reduced motor tax

58 per cent would consider switching if they could benefit from cheaper motor insurance.

As well as MORE TH>N’s insurance discount, hybrid car drivers also benefit from a reduction in car tax announced in the 2006 budget and exemption from the congestion charge in central London.

With petrol prices approaching £1 (one pound sterling) per litre across Britain and three quarters (74 per cent) of drivers expressing serious concern about rising fuel prices, any move to cut the cost of motoring will be welcomed by cost-conscious drivers.

But it’s not just fiscal reasons that motivate people to go green, the research reveals. Four in ten motorists would consider switching for the environmental benefits and almost half (48 per cent) are seriously concerned about the impact that full petrol cars have on the environment. Despite this, only one in five of those questioned by MORE TH>N know the amount of carbon dioxide that their current car emits.

Keith Maxwell, head of motor insurance at MORE TH>N insurance, says: "Green motoring is going to be a massive growth area for the car industry as petrol prices continue to rise and concern over global warming grows. We want to financially reward drivers who are taking steps to do their bit for the environment."

The number of hybrid cars registered in the UK rose by 74 per cent from 2004 to 2005 and 1 billion hybrid vehicles are predicted to be on the world’s roads by 20205. According to the MORE TH>N research6, one in ten of us either drives ourselves or knows someone who drives a hybrid car, a further 50 per cent would be interested in test-driving a hybrid car, and 65 per cent believe that we will all have to change our vehicles to more environmentally-friendly models sooner or later.
