Drivers now need to deal more effectively with new snow

10th February 2009 Print
Drivers will need to deal effectively with snow and ice on the road in the coming week, especially on untreated side roads, warned the IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) as fresh snow falls are predicted.

Peter Rodger, IAM Chief Examiner, said: “Many of the disruptions on roads during last week's winter weather were caused by drivers failing to manage the unfamiliar conditions. We'll make a better job of getting where we want to go by car this week if everyone prepares themselves and their vehicles for the journey.”

The IAM’s six top driving tips for wintery conditions are:

Allow plenty of time, and plan a route on major roads with as few steep hills as possible

Give yourself plenty of space around you - don't follow closely, especially on hills

Clear the car of snow properly before you start the journey, including the roof and bonnet

Try to avoid having to stop just before you climb a slope – or on the slope itself

Drive very smoothly without rushing anything and

Pack the emergency essentials – a shovel, warm coat and charged mobile phone.

“Keep your speed sensibly low, but not so low that you cannot climb a slope, or the car is pulled into the gutter by the camber of the road. Judgement is a key factor, and if you have to slow or stop for safety, do so smoothly,” said Mr Rodger.

With more bad weather predicted we should prepare ourselves to deal with it, rather than be overcome by it.

Before setting off, Mr Rodger said that the vehicle should be properly clear of ice and snow for the sake of good all round visibility.

“It is not enough to simply clear a bit of the windscreen and rely on the heater to do the rest. We saw too many ‘mobile igloos’ last week, spreading snow from their roof and bonnets when they eventually got to treated roads.”
