Redrow warms up for Ninian Park venture

Redrow warms up for Ninian Park venture Ninian Park, home to Cardiff City FC for 99 years, now has a new owner – Redrow Homes.

The award-winning housebuilder has taken vacant possession of the football stadium and will immediately begin a phased programme of demolition, with a community of 142 new homes its eventual goal.

Building of the first new homes will quickly follow, with a hat-trick of fully furnished show homes due to open in spring 2010.

Redrow has planning consent for 142 new dwellings, mostly two, three and four-bedroom homes in predominantly two-storey designs. Designed specifically for this location, they will boast a winning combination of contemporary exteriors and Redrow’s latest interior specification.

Stuart Rowlands, managing director of Redrow Homes (South Wales), says: “As a former main sponsor of Cardiff City, we are delighted that our scheme to redevelop the old Ninian Park stadium is now coming to fruition.

“We will be following the ‘Bluebirds’ closely in their campaign to win promotion to the Premier League from their brand new stadium in Leckworth and we, in turn, will be building a premier selection of new homes at Ninian Park.”

Redrow’s scheme will include a central area of public open space as close as possible to the Ninian Park ground’s ‘centre spot’ and this area will be made a special feature. The developer is also looking to commission a replica of the old stadium gates to make an entrance statement.

Cardiff City chairman Peter Ridsdale, who officially handed over the old stadium to its new owners, said: “I am delighted that Ninian Park will continue to be in the hands of our good friends at Redrow. Redrow have been generous supporters of Cardiff City for some time and this development is a fitting way forward for Ninian Park.”

Demolition of the old stands and existing buildings is expected to take approximately six months to complete. Construction of new homes will take place in phases, with the first homes ready to move into shortly after the show homes open and the development expected to take three years to complete.
