Prevention is the best protection

Over 40% of UK drivers have been a victim of car crime, according to recent figures and 1 in 5 no longer feel safe on Britain’s roads. In response to this, TRACKER, the UK leader in stolen vehicle recovery, has highlighted practical precautions motorists can take to make themselves safer.

“With 20% of motorists feeling at risk on the road, it is important that people take a proactive stance toward their own safety,” explains Stuart Chapman, Police Relationship Manager at TRACKER. “This applies as much to young male drivers as it does women and the elderly. Taking sensible and simple precautions before and during every car journey can drastically reduce the risk of being involved in a threatening incident. By employing a few safety measures, motorists can feel more confident, which will make them a less likely target for criminals.”

TRACKER has compiled a list of top tips to help motorists keep safe while on the road.

TRACKER’S TOP SECURITY TIPS

Plan your route so you don’t get lost in a strange part of town

If you are fearful for your safety, drive to a busy area and pull into a petrol station, flashing your lights and blowing the horn

If someone is indicating for you to pull over, make sure you pull into a petrol station or other crowded area

If you need to ask for directions go to a petrol station or similar busy place to avoid having to ask strangers

When driving lock all doors, including the driver’s door, especially when stationary in traffic or at the lights

Never retaliate when another driver acts aggressively towards you, simply apologise by raising a hand or drive to a busy area if they persist

Chapman concludes “By adopting a few simple measures, drivers can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of car crime. It only takes a few moments of thought, but prevention is definitely the best protection from criminals.”
