Spanair reinforces its commitment to the Canary Islands

14th June 2007 Print
As one of the carrier's priority tourist and business destinations, Spanair is strengthening its presence in the Canary Islands, via 38 different routes to and from the islands; an increase with respect to 2006 that will achieve up to 15% during the summer season.

As one of Spanair's strategic markets, the Company aims at increasing its presence in the Canary Islands, offering passengers flights from 13 cities in mainland Spain - Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Bilbao, Vigo, La Coruña, Santiago de Compostela, Pamplona, Seville, Malaga, Granada, and Jerez de la Frontera, to six of the archipelago's airports - Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Tenerife Norte (north) and Tenerife Sur (south), Las Palmas, and La Palma.

During the summer months, the company's commitment will be reflected by a significant increase in flights on the following routes compared to last year:

- Madrid-Tenerife Norte (north), with 32 weekly flights
- Madrid-Tenerife Sur (south), with 14 weekly flights
- Madrid-La Palma, with 4 weekly flights
- Barcelona - Las Palmas, with 15 weekly flights
- Barcelona - Lanzarote, with 8 weekly flights
- Bilbao-Lanzarote, with 5 weekly flights
- Bilbao-Las Palmas, with 3 weekly flights
- Seville-Tenerife Sur (south), with 5 weekly flights

The flight timetable will also be further enhanced with the commencement of new routes linking the Canary Islands with the following Spanish mainland destinations, adding to the total number of Spanair routes between the mainland and the Canary Islands:

- Seville-Lanzarote, with 1 weekly flight
- Bilbao-Fuerteventura, with 1 weekly flight
- Seville-Fuerteventura, with 1 weekly flight
- Santiago-Fuerteventura, with 1 weekly flight
- Granada-Tenerife Sur (south), with 1 weekly flight
- Pamplona-Tenerife Sur (south), with 1 weekly flight

With a weekly average of 187 scheduled flights in June this year, 9% up on 2006, and 211 weekly flights during the August peak season, Spanair is the best option both for the Canary Islands residents and for people living in mainland Spain, who wish to fly there.

In 2006, the company achieved a 13% passenger growth travelling on these routes - as opposed to the market increase of 8%, reaching a total market share of 24.6% during last year. This is evidence that Spanair is growing at a higher rate than that of the airline industry as a whole.

"The Canary Islands is a priority destination for Spanair, and for this reason the company continues to strengthen and extend its large flight network between mainland Spain and the islands", stated Lars Nygaard, CEO of Spanair.

“He added that "Spanair's outstanding performance in strengthening its presence and links with the region consolidates it as the leading Spanish airline in this market, offering passengers a wide variety of destinations and routes, as well as a flight timetable designed to facilitate connections with the whole of our domestic flight network, via Madrid, and with the rest of Spanair's international destinations and those of the Star Alliance member carriers".

Spanair was founded in 1986 and offers more than 600 daily flights, operated with a fleet of 65 aircraft and in code share with its partners, to 241 destinations. Since April 2003, Spanair is a member of Star Alliance, the largest and most prestigious airline network in the world.
