10th March 2009 Print
With the Easter holidays fast approaching, parents will be scratching their heads thinking of ways to entertain their children over the break, whilst others will be looking for ideas on how to spend the bank holiday.

bmibaby is showcasing some of the best events taking place over the Easter break and it is easy to get to Europe with a low cost flight from East Midlands, Birmingham International, Manchester and Cardiff International Airport.

Paris – Easter egg hunt

Head to Paris and take part in a traditional Easter egg hunt at the Galeries Lafayette. Open to children aged between five and twelve years, the children have one hour to scour the store to seek out the Easter eggs. All places must be reserved in advance on the shopping centre’s website. Paris is also home to the Foire du Trone from 01 March – 31 May 2009. This quintessentially French fair is one of the largest in the country and attracts over five million visitors each year. The fair combines modern rollercoastsers and arcades with traditional acrobats and jugglers and is one of the biggest events in the Parisian calendar.

Alicante festival

Visit Alicante during April to experience the Moors and Christians Festival, a magical mix of street carnival, religion and history. The festival includes a re enactment of the battle between the Moors and the Christians to honour the regional patron Saint George. Head to the outdoor squares Plaça Emili Sala and La Plaça de Dins for the liveliest celebrations.

Palma – Semana Santa

For an Easter with a cultural difference, visit Palma for the Semana Santa. This is tradition repeated year after year to celebrate the Holy Week of Easter (5-12 April 2009). Both tourists and locals join together to participate in the procession that winds through the streets of Palma and converges in the squares, giving the feeling of an open air temple.

Nice – Gourd Festival

For somewhere closer to home, why not head to Nice and welcome the start of spring with the Gourd Festival. From 29 March in Jardins du Cimiez this annual tradition celebrates the end of winter and the start of spring, which is symbolised by the Gourd or Cougourdon. The Gourd Festival includes exhibits, gourd inspired food and traditional Provencal music.

Amsterdam – Race of the Classics

In Amsterdam between 13 and 19 April, over twenty teams of sailors in beautiful classic boats take to the seas in the Race of the Classics. The boats sail from Rotterdam, and then travel via Ostend across the North Sea to either Ramsgate or Lowestoft in the UK, before heading back to Amsterdam for a finishing party. This is one of the biggest amateur sailing events in Europe and attracts a lot of spectators.

Malaga - water sports heaven

For some watery entertainment head to Malaga this Easter. With temperatures in April averaging 21 degrees Celsius, there is no better way to cool off than hitting the Parque Acuático Mijas, which offers crazy slides, pools, picnic areas and restaurants. For more aqua fun head to Funny Beach in Marbella for games and water sports for all ages. From trampolines to banana boats, or even go karts, there is something for everyone whether it is relaxing or some adrenalin filled action!

With the above events providing just a taster of what is happening throughout Europe over Easter, there is plenty of reason to get away for the school holidays.
