Don’t let fraudsters play ‘fast and furious’ with your cash
Speed addicts could be inspired by the release this week of US box-office top grossing movie, ‘Fast and Furious’ to buy their own performance car. But HPI, the used vehicle information expert, is warning against getting carried away by the excitement of the drive and ending up out of pocket.“Seeing cars like the Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 and BMW M5 being put through their paces on the big screen can make them very appealing for any would-be speed addicts”, confirmed Nick Lindsay, Director of HPI. “However we are warning enthusiasts considering buying one of these vehicles to tread with care and perform a history check before parting with their cash.”
“Some buyers could be tempted by the thrill of the drive to rush into a purchase without checking the vehicle’s history – especially if they spot a bargain. But that could be a costly mistake as these vehicles are just as – if not more - vulnerable to the scams committed by criminals and unscrupulous sellers. Indeed, first impressions could definitely catch buyers out with the hidden dangers, such as insurance write-off damage or clocking, being missed unless an HPI Check is carried out.
“Buyers should remember that if a potential purchase looks too good to be true, it probably is. Although these vehicles might look impressive on the outside – they could be harbouring a hidden history beneath the flash exterior.”
As well as doing an HPI Check, there are other simple steps consumers can take to ensure they aren’t taken for a ride, such as researching the market, checking the average value of the vehicle in question and making sure the asking price is not suspiciously low. Buyers should also try to get an independent mechanical inspection and, importantly for performance cars, try not be taken in by cosmetics. Viewing the vehicle on a clear day in good light can help make an accurate appraisal. And buyers should be wary of vehicles advertised overseas where the seller requests money up front for any costs – a tactic commonly used by criminals. Finally, always get a receipt for any deposit.
“A performance car, especially one with a low price tag, can be a tempting purchase” concluded Nick Lindsay. “But before buyers part with their money, just a simple action like performing an HPI Check can avoid a dream purchase turning into a nightmare.”
HPI Checks are available at hpicheck.com from just £19.99.
