Nationwide network of EV charging stations good for UK business

16th April 2009 Print
As part of its £250 million initiative to covert British drivers to green motoring by 2011, the Department for Transport today announced an intention to “provide £20 million for [electric vehicle] charging points and related infrastructure”. The only company currently able to support this goal is Brighton-based Elektromotive, the company behind the UK-designed-and-built Elektrobay which remains the world’s only fully-operational electric vehicle (EV) charging station.

The Government’s promise to contribute up to £5,000 toward the cost of buying an electric or plug-in electric hybrid vehicle is expected to accelerate the transition to zero emissions motoring. Elektromotive is already working with local authorities, energy companies and vehicle manufacturers to ensure the appropriate infrastructure is in place.

Due to fast-growing demand for charging facilities across London, next month the 100th Elektrobay will be installed in the Capital. First introduced in Westminster in 2006, Elektrobay’s are now used round-the-clock across London and a further 60 units are installed around the UK. Elektromotive is currently in advanced talks with cities in the North East and Midlands to expand its charging network further.

The Elektrobay can be installed on the roadside and in car parks, and its compact size and minimalist design blends effortlessly into the local surroundings.

Calvey Taylor-Haw, Managing Director of Elektromotive, said, “The Government’s funding is a welcome step on the road towards emissions-free motoring, and will help bring forward the creation of an EV charging network across the UK. It is essential the appropriate infrastructure is in place to support the proposed EV revolution, and we are uniquely ready and able to support the Government scheme. In the future we aim to have an Elektrobay on every street in the country.”
