Scuderi split-cycle engine at Engine Expo 2009
Further reinforcing Engine EXPO’s credentials as Europe’s leading specialist showcase of the world’s most significant new automotive engine technology, the Scuderi Group has chosen the Stuttgart-based event as the European debut of its proof-of-concept prototype Split-Cycle Engine. Most significantly, the new engine gives automotive OEMs an immediate solution for complying with lower emissions legislation and higher efficiency standards, without having to make large investments to modify current production processes. The engine, which its designers claim has the ability to completely revolutionize the future viability of the internal combustion engine, is being unveiled as a naturally aspirated one-litre petrol unit, which is expected to produce up to 80 percent fewer toxins than a typical internal combustion engine. Furthermore, when fully developed with its turbocharged and Air-Hybrid components, the engine is expected to achieve significant gains in fuel efficiency – the most significant advance since the Otto cycle over 130 years ago.
The engine prototype is currently undergoing testing and analysis by an independent laboratory in San Antonio, Texas. The new technology divides the four strokes of a conventional combustion cycle over two paired cylinders: one intake/compression cylinder and one power/exhaust cylinder. By firing after top-dead center, it produces highly efficient, cleaner combustion with one cylinder and compressed air in the other. Unlike conventional engines that require two crankshaft revolutions to complete a single combustion cycle, the Scuderi Engine requires just one. Besides the improvements in efficiency and emissions, studies show that the Scuderi Engine is capable of producing more torque than conventional gasoline and diesel engines. Visit ScuderiEngine.com for more information. Scuderi will be conducting a press conference and presentation in the show’s press room at 12.00pm on Tuesday 16th June.
Two other new engines will also be on display at the EXPO on the 16, 17, 18 June. These are Ilmor Engineering’s 5-stroke concept engine, where visitors will be invited to inspect and interact with the ingenious inner workings of the highly fuel-efficient engine. Additionally, Finnish company Aumet Oy, will be showing its Z ENGINE, a new type of 4/2-stroke diesel engine, which recent tests have revealed achieves very good efficiency, especially at part loads, while NOx emission levels are also very low thanks to its low operating temperatures.
Engine EXPO will also be hosting an open technology forum across all three days of the show, while the eagerly awaited Engine of the Year Awards, will be presented during the show at a ceremony on Wednesday 17th June.
