Driving on the piste?
Losing control on the slopes can be a scary experience but not as scary as losing control of a vehicle when you are behind the wheel on a snowy mountain road. As more British snowsports enthusiasts choose to rent a vehicle for their ski holidays, Avis offers advice on driving in winter conditions and how to look after your car in extreme weather. The tips may also come in handy as winter weather sweeps the UK this week!Renting a car on arrival in Europe, the US or Canada means skiers have a greater chance to explore the variety of slopes on offer. A car provides extra space for luggage and equipment and the additional freedom to move from resort to resort. However, skiers need to be prepared to ensure safety when driving on unknown roads, in an unfamiliar vehicle.
Avis’ Top Tips on winter driving
1. Always park your vehicle downhill and in the direction you want to travel the next morning
2. Request snow chains for your rental vehicle from your pick up Avis location, find out how to fit them before you travel
3. Always accelerate gently when starting the vehicle and with a manual car use the highest gear at which you can move without stalling (usually 2nd gear)
4. Always engage the clutch before starting the engine of your vehicle
5. Ensure that the engine on your vehicle has warmed up before setting off.
6. If possible do not use the handbrake when your vehicle is stationary or parked. If this is not possible do not pull the handbrake up fully in case it freezes in position
7. If your vehicle starts to skid DO NOT hit the brakes. Ease off the accelerator and steer into the direction of the skid until you gain control
8. When your vehicle is parked ensure the front and back windscreen wipers are away from the windscreen.
9. Be prepared - always plan your journey and check weather forecasts
10. Always have a good amount of petrol in the vehicle and ensure you have an emergency pack with warm clothing and refreshments
