Show me the way to Chile

6th July 2007 Print
On 16th July 10 boys from Derby Grammar School along with the Headmaster’s secretary Louise Blackwall, Derek Burdett from World Challenge and a little help from National Car Rental will be heading to Chile On a World Challenge Expedition. This is the first time World Challenge have sent a team to Chile and so the expedition is a real trek into uncharted territory for all concerned.

The first leg of the impressive tour is from Derby to Heathrow airport with the support of National Car Rental, the UK’s leading car rental organisation. National has kindly offered to transport the boys to ensure they arrive in the comfort and safety of a National minibus.

World Challenge is the original schools expedition company, working with over 700 schools each year. While on their expedition the boys will be responsible for completing painting work and minor repairs to the UPASOL hostel in La Serena, on the coast of Northern Chile. UPASOL is part of the Hogar de Cristo Foundation and the boys will be working with disabled children, and have been asked to arrange a local sports day and football match. They will also be expected to organise themselves ensuring schedules are met and the team will be scaling some of the highest volcanoes and trekking in some of the most inhospitable places on earth during their four week tour of Chile.

Louise Blackwall from Derby Grammar School comments “The boys are really excited about their trip and thanks to National the first leg of the trip has been made easy for us. The team have had to raise an enormous amount of money for the trip and so the extremely generous offer from National to get us to the airport is one less cost to think about”.

Dawn Clayton, Marketing Manager for National Car Rental concludes; “This is a great project for the school to be involved in and it’s our pleasure to offer the explorers a minibus to help them on their way to Chile. They have National’s full support and we wish them the best of luck for the trip”.
