Icelandair takes off from Glasgow

27th August 2009 Print
Icelandair re-launches its service from Glasgow today, 27 August with two flights per week to/from Iceland. Flights will operate on Thursdays and Sundays. Then on 25 September, flights will increase to four flights per week operating on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

The four flights per week starting 25 September will operate as a “triangle route” using the following routing: Reykjavik (KEF) – Manchester (MAN) – Glasgow (GLA) – Reykjavik (KEF). The schedule fits into Icelandair’s “hub and spoke” system, allowing passengers to connect onwards to Icelandair’s North American destinations like New York City, Boston, Seattle and more. The connection times to North America are short, resulting in elapsed flying times comparable or better than the competition.

Hjörvar Sæberg Högnason, General Manager – UK, said, “We are thrilled to be able to serve the Scottish community once again with our service from Glasgow. Passengers will enjoy the same warm Icelandic hospitality that they have come to expect, plus experience our new leather seats, interactive entertainment systems and three classes of cabin service.”

Amanda McMillan, Managing Director of Glasgow Airport, said, "We are delighted to welcome Icelandair back to Glasgow Airport, with a new schedule that not only offers convenient city breaks to Reykjavik, but also provides improved connections to the United States. Icelandair has a proud track record of serving Scotland over 60 years. Their return to Glasgow signals their renewed commitment to the city and to Scotland, and we wish them every success with their new schedule.

"This historic link has supported business and tourism links between Scotland and Iceland since the 1940s. The return of Icelandair is therefore a matter of great pride for Glasgow Airport."

Icelandair is one of Iceland’s longest established companies, connecting the world and Iceland for over 70 years. Icelandair flies from the UK to Iceland with connecting service to Boston, Halifax, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York City, Orlando, Seattle and Toronto.
