Most motorists need extra space when they go on holiday - a roof box provides a simple answer because it can be fitted in minutes. Roof boxes are a good method of distributing extra weight; it saves overloading the boot, unbalancing the vehicle and avoids the need to fit a tow bar.

Virtually all vehicles have ready made fixing points to attach roof bars and more vehicles than ever are now supplied with running rails designed to take a pair of bars in seconds.

According to mail order specialist Car Parts Direct, motorists are demanding higher security, easy access to the roof box and more prestigious designs than ever before – designer roof boxes are in this year.

Mark Cornwall of Car Parts Direct said, "Our best selling roof box is the new Rossini traveller, a sleek, glossy carbon fibre design. It’s more aerodynamic than last year’s model, with a twin locking system for extra security, sprung loaded struts and a side opener for easy access. It costs £30 more than our normal 320 litre roof box, but it’s become an instant best seller - especially with prestige car drivers."

Most roof boxes are supplied in kit form where struts and hinges need to be assembled on delivery. The new designer ‘Rossini traveller’ roof box is supplied assembled and ready to fit straight on to roof bars and costs £149 delivered free anywhere in the UK. A full range of roof bars, racks and accessories are also available online at carparts-direct.co.uk
