AA launches guide to help motorists save money

Transport costs take the greatest share of a family's household spending each week with 13.4% of outgoings spent on transport according to Government figures.

Of those transport costs, 83% is spent on buying and running the family car - equal to the total amount spent on housing, fuel and power. In the current economic climate families throughout the country are looking at ways to reduce their weekly expenditure. To help families find ways of cutting these costs, the AA has produced a low cost guide called "The Money Saving Motorist".

The handy guide covers all areas of motoring giving useful tips and advice on how to save money both in the long and short term. From choosing the right car and how to maintain it, to getting the most out of your fuel, The Money Saving Motorist, is a must have for the cash-conscious motorist. The practical tips make driving more affordable for all motorists from the high mileage business driver to those who rely on their cars as an essential lifeline.

Edmund King, AA president, said, "Owning and running a car is essential for most people however the rising costs are making this harder for many families. By following the advice in this guide motorists can learn not only how to drive more economically but also some key tips on choosing the right car for their lifestyle, saving money on insurance and some basic maintenance that will help make your car more efficient."

Simple tips, such as sticking to the speed limit not only reduces the risk of speeding fines, but can also save you around £110 if you drive 12,000 miles a year. Ten percent of motorists are cutting back on servicing to save money but this is a false economy, as more expensive faults may develop. For example, a timing belt may cost £50 to repair but a new engine as a result of neglect could cost £3,000.

The Money Saving Motorist costs just £1.99 RRP and is available for theAA.com/shop for £1.59
