Car colours remain constant in changing times

4th August 2009 Print
Despite the economic turmoil that has engulfed the globe, it seems that some consumer trends remain doggedly unchanged.

Annual research findings from used car giant Carcraft reveal that car buying stereotypes are alive and kicking in the face of monetary meltdown.

Top of the list in car colour preference for the second year running is silver, with 31% of buyers choosing the colour over any other on offer. That’s a decrease of only 1% compared to last year.

Next in line comes blue, unchanged at 25% of all purchases made. Whilst black and grey cars saw an increase of just 1% in ownership. Eighties favourite red remains steady at 9%, whilst green fell out of favour by a mere 1%.

The colour preferences remain virtually unchanged even when overlaid by the gender of the buyer. So what do the findings tell us about the make-up of UK motorists?

“Colour psychologists say silver denotes prestige and wealth” explains Carcraft’s Marketing Manager, Stacey Ludlow. “So it could be that drivers are outwardly trying to say ‘look, I’m doing well despite the recession.’ The fact that blue, a colour favoured by those with a family focus, is still a popular second choice perhaps indicates the importance of security in uncertain times.”

With over 4,000 cars from over 40 manufacturers to choose from, Carcraft sales figures offer a reliable insight into the driving psyche on UK roads.

Besides offering car buyers great choice, Carcraft also guarantees to take any car as part exchange. Coupled with 7 flexible ways to pay, the nationwide chain is committed to making motoring more affordable for everyone.
