HPI supports new emissions labelling scheme for used cars

24th August 2009 Print

HPI welcomes the extension of the CO2, fuel economy labelling scheme to include used cars. As motorists become more aware of the issues surrounding CO2 emissions, it is important for dealers to be able to help consumers make informed choices. HPI has been actively involved with the Department for Transport (DfT), the VCA (Vehicle Certification Agency) and the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP) for the launch of the new HPI used car CO2 certificate. Launched in 2008, HPI’s CO2 Certificate comes free with every HPI Check, and provides motor dealers and consumers with a clear presentation of a vehicle’s CO2 emissions.

“We fully support the new fuel efficiency label for used cars, being introduced by the Low Carbon Partnership (LowCVP), which follows in the footsteps of HPI’s own CO2 Certificate,” explains Alan Bishop, Industry Relations Director for HPI. “Our CO2 Certificate is available as part of HPI’s standard service, so dealers don’t have to go out of their way to download this information. In addition, our service is also available to consumers, who automatically receive an environmental information sheet as part of their HPI Check, helping motorists and dealers alike.”

Free with every HPI Check, HPI’s CO2 Certificate highlights the level of CO2 emissions a vehicle creates, using the industry standard CO2 emissions rating chart – reflecting those already being displayed on new vehicles. HPI’s certificates have 13 bandings, with category A being the lowest CO2 emitting vehicles, through to M, the highest. This gives consumers the environmental data they need when determining a suitable vehicle for their needs.

Bishop concludes, “Increasingly, motorists are becoming aware that better environmental performance also means lower running costs and lower road tax. This means it is more important than ever to provide used car buyers with information on the potential environmental and financial implications of their purchase. We welcome news of the latest CO2 labelling initiative for used cars as this clearly illustrates how essential it is for the industry to work together to make consumers aware of the impact their car buying decisions have.

“HPI’s CO2 Certificate is available with the HPI Check at no extra cost and already allows dealers to demonstrate their commitment to customer support and the environment. By providing consumers with the right information, HPI can help them make greener purchasing decisions, as well as helping dealers operate best practice and meet the changing needs of their customers.”
