Zagoria in Greece

For those that enjoy scenic walks through spectacular mountain landscapes or aspire to walk the world’s deepest gorge, popular European destinations such as the Pyrenees in France or the Dolomites in Italy might spring to mind – but all this is available in a country better known for its islands and beaches – Greece.

Greek specialists Travelux offer week-long walking tours to the stunning mountain region of Zagoria in Northwest Greece.

This relatively undiscovered area tucked away deep in the Pindos Mountains offers an abundance of walks for all different abilities. Home to Vikos Gorge, listed in the Guinness Book of Records 2005 as the deepest canyon in the world in proportion to its width, it also offers dramatic views of towering cliffs and breathtaking ravines interspersed with fast-flowing rivers, rumbling waterfalls and a wealth of wild flowers and rich fauna.

For those who are seeking a true hellenic experience, Zagoria has 46 picturesque stone villages with a mass of ancient architecture, monasteries, archaeological sites and museums to explore.

To enjoy all this, Travelux offers week-long walking tours in May and June when the days are slightly cooler and the flora and fauna is at its best. Whilst enjoying walks such as ‘The Vradeto Steps’; a snaking, banistered staircase that winds down a vertical cliff affording fabulous views of the gorge and surrounding mountains, the guide will point out rare orchids which are native to the area as well as wild herbs that grow in abundance. With over 50 varieties of orchids and 1750 wild flower species, botanists will be bowled over by its blooming beauty!

Prices in 2008 start from under £900 per person to include return flights from London Gatwick or Manchester, resort transfers, seven nights’ accommodation staying in a mountain retreat on a full board basis with fully guided walks each day. There are six days of walking per week, each one approximately three to four hours (or longer, depending on the group) with ample opportunity to stop and enjoy the spectacular scenery. Guests are required to carry their own day sack.
