Aries has the most motoring run-ins, while Sagittarians aim for a cleaner record

If you were born under Aries, beware, as the sign of ‘the ram’ picks up the most motoring claims and convictions, according to research by moneysupermarket.com. By contrast, Sagittarians (‘the archer’) appear to make the most cautious drivers of all the star signs. Arians file nine per cent more claims and rack up six per cent more motoring convictions than average, while Sagittarians file seven per cent fewer claims and receive eight per cent fewer convictions than average.

Arians, such as Sir Elton John and Victoria Beckham, are described by their star sign as impatient, often rushing into situations before thinking. Sagittarians, on the other hand, are cited as being precise and tolerant, both traits displayed by John Terry, hotly-tipped to become the future England captain, and Prince Charles.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at price comparison website moneysupermarket.com, which conducted the research, said: “Some drivers will read more into this than others, but it’s fair to say we were surprised how closely this year’s claims and conviction statistics mirrored traditional star sign traits.”

moneysupermarket.com warns that motorists with a claim or conviction can end up paying hundreds of pounds more for their annual policy – around £940 with some providers – compared to drivers with a clean record. However, some insurers are more lenient than others towards transgressions, and motorists could save themselves hundreds of pounds by comparing their current provider’s quoted premium with others on the market.

Mason added: “Drivers should keep sight of the potential social and financial consequences of letting their standards slip, whatever their star sign. If you do have to make a claim, or worse still receive a driving conviction, it’s definitely worth shopping around since your premiums may well rise and your current insurer may no longer offer the best value for money.”
