NHS sorely missed by Brits overseas
With 24% of people looking to move abroad in the next twelve months, a new report reveals what Britons will miss the most when relocating overseas and offers some advice on what to pack, aside from their sunglasses and sun cream. With a chequered history of waiting lists and fat cat salaries, it seems the NHS is more valued by Brits than expected – with one in five (17%) claiming this to be the thing they would miss the most when leaving the UK.
The latest research from Foreign Currency Direct, provider of best buy currency for homes abroad questioned 2,000 people on whether they are considering a property purchase abroad and what they would miss the most about Old Blighty. The top things people would miss the most are;
1. NHS
2. Christmas
3. Food – such as Branston pickle and Heinz tomato ketchup
4. British pubs and beer
5. Football
6. British breakfasts and roast dinners
7. UK newspapers
8. British TV soaps
9. Afternoon tea
10. Other British traditions such as family BBQs
People aged over 55, perhaps those with health problems, are most concerned about leaving the NHS behind – 23% of over 55s cite this as top on the ‘miss list’ – compared to the 17% national average and just 11% of 18 to 24 year olds
Women would miss their favourite food brands far more than men (13% v 9%) – whereas men would pine for pubs (14% v 4% for women)
Christmas traditions would be most truly missed by those people from the North East – with 22% of Tyne Tees residents citing this as a real concern when moving abroad – compared to just five per cent of people living in North Scotland, who are more than happy to embrace new traditions for the festive period
Although just four per cent of people would worry about missing the latest episode of Eastenders, for those living in Scotland, a more significant 14 per cent of people would miss their regular soap instalments
Why are Brits moving?
Reason for leaving the UK - % of people citing this reason (February 2008)
Cost of living/value for money 39%
Crime/yob culture 33%
Weather/climate 31%
Investment reasons/tax 29%
Peter S Ellis, CEO of Foreign Currency Direct commented on the findings, “We would urge Britons looking to relocate to thoroughly research the local amenities and resources of their chosen destination. Whilst their favourite biscuit brand might not always be available, a move overseas is an ideal opportunity to embrace a new culture, food and traditions of a different country.
Buying property overseas is an excellent investment and a great opportunity for a better quality of life. At Foreign Currency Direct we can help you make additional savings when it comes to currency transfers.”
