Porsche Carrera Cup GB finale at Silverstone

Damien Faulkner - 2006 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Champion With the overall title Porsche Carrera Cup GB settled in favour of Damien Faulkner at Brands Hatch last time out, this weekend's final Porsche Carrera Cup GB races of the season at Silverstone (14/15 October) will be all about winning races, rather than thinking about championship points.

With the title in his pocket, Damien Faulkner (Co Donegal) is determined to sign off his Carrera Cup GB career with another win. Faulkner has been racing with the title firmly in his mind for much of the year, and his tally of 17 podium finishes in 18 races to date has enabled the Irish racer to retain the title he clinched at Silverstone a year ago.

Danny Watts (Team IRWIN with Red Line), meanwhile, is the local hero from Buckingham, and has taken a rather different approach to the season. He has won 10 of the 14 races he has contested, but missing four races in the early weeks of the season when Richard Westbrook was in the car, meant that Danny was never in the overall title contest. Now, both drivers can focus on simply winning races and that should make for a fascinating head-to-head.

But this is not simply a two-way contest. Tim Harvey (Oxford) has won this season and dearly wants to win again, while Michael Caine (Newmarket), Jason Templeman (Nottingham), and Richard Williams (London) and James Pickford (Macclesfield) – the latter pair racing for Stratford upon Avon-based team IN2RACING - each have the potential to win races. It really is a top quality entry, and the Pro category is packed with quick racers.

While Faulkner is secure as champion, Harvey needs to keep an eye on Watts in the battle for second in the final reckonings, but if Tim has another strong weekend, he will fend off the former F3 ace.

While the Pro racers battle at the head of the field, the Pro-Am racers will be having their own contest. Rising star Phil Quaife (Tonbridge) clinched the title at Brands Hatch after an exemplary season and will now be bidding to beat as many Pro drivers as possible at Silverstone.

But the battle for the other Pro-Am places remains to be resolved as drivers like Nigel Rice (Beverley, East Yorkshire), David Ashburn (London), Andy Purdie (Maidstone), Jason Young (Oakham, Leicstershire) and Mike Richards (Knutsford) all fight for victory. They've all won in the Pro-Am category this season, as has young Sam Edwards (Aylesbury). Unfortunately, a technical infringement has cost Sam his outside shot of toppling Quaife, but he will be gunning to win again at Silverstone.

TV presenter and journalist Vicki Butler-Henderson will be joining the Championship regulars in the Carrera Cup GB at Silverstone as part of a feature for the Fifth Gear motoring programme on Channel 5.

Vicki will be racing the car entered by Porsche Cars GB in association with Vertu, the world’s first and only manufacturer of luxury handcrafted mobile phones, and is relishing the chance to sample the latest Type 997 911 GT3 Cup race car. So far, her only experience of racing a Porsche was back in 2003 when she tackled two rounds of the Carrera Cup at Brands Hatch.

Vicki, who has considerable sports car racing experience, will be followed by the Fifth Gear TV cameras throughout the weekend.

The opening 28-lap race will be on Saturday afternoon, with a second 28-lap race at 15:00 on Sunday afternoon. Sunday's race will, as usual, be broadcast live on Motors TV as part of that channel’s extensive BTCC race day coverage.
