Kane heads Porsche Carrera Cup GB to Snetterton
Steven Kane (Northampton) leads the title battle in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB heading to Snetterton (Norfolk) this weekend (28/29 July) for rounds 13 and 14 of the 20-round championship. With a 19-point lead over James Sutton and eight races to run, these are tense times for Kane and the Motorbase Performance team. If he can keep on finishing strongly in the top three, it will be tough for Sutton to catch him. But one poor result and the title race could be turned on its head, and Sutton will be pushing very hard following a superb double win at Donington Park in the most recent races. "I've always liked Snetterton so I can't see any reason why it shouldn't be good for us," says Kane.
However, Sutton (Barnet) is chasing relentlessly and is still well in contention. He knows he must try to beat Kane in every race left this season to have a chance of winning the title. His pace over recent race weekends has been hugely impressive, so a fierce title showdown is in prospect over the remaining races.
The other driver still holding realistic title hopes is Tim Harvey (Oxford), although he has slipped back a little in recent races. He now really needs Kane and Sutton to have one poor result to even the scores, and Harvey is confident ahead of the trip to Norfolk. "I went very well there in the pre-season test and was faster than Richard Westbrook, so that bodes well," said Harvey.
Currently battling for fourth place in the points' standings are Michael Caine (Newmarket) and Sam Hancock (Clapham). Hancock has been pitching for podium finishes in recent races, while Caine is working flat out to try and score his debut Carrera Cup win. Snetterton is his home track, so Caine would love nothing better than to get that breakthrough win this weekend. "This is a very important round for us. Last year we had two seconds and hopefully we'll be quick this year," says Caine.
However, there is more quality in the pro category in the form of Jon Barnes (Southampton) and David Epton (Preston) at Team Parker Racing. Barnes was very strong on his return to the series at Donington, while Epton enjoyed his first taste of Porsche racing and will be seeking to build his experience at Snetterton.
The pro-am category is consistently delivering some great racing and it is Nigel Rice (Beverley) who still has a useful advantage heading into the final eight races. His opposition is getting stronger and stronger, and it is Andy Britnell (Hildenborough, Kent) and Charles Bateman (Boston) who are really taking the fight to Rice. Adding to the pro-am category will be Pete Osborne (Worksop) and Maxi Jazz (Norwood), while racing returnee Steve Clark (Stourbridge) joins the grid with Team RPM.
Meanwhile, at the wheel of the Porsche Motorsport guest entry will be Ian White (Yeovil), back for his second weekend of racing in the Carrera Cup GB. Ian earned his prize weekend for winning the 2006 Porsche Club Championship and now has the chance to step up to the Carrera Cup at his favourite track.
