Respect Our Road Workers campaign wins award

2nd October 2009 Print
The Respect our Road Workers Campaign, developed by the Highways Agency on behalf of the Road Workers’ Safety Forum (RoWSaF), has scooped a prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.

The award was presented to the Forum by Adrian Walsh, director of the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards, in recognition of achievement and innovation which will improve road safety.

In Autumn 2008 the Highways Agency launched a DVD called 'Respect', highlighting why drivers should have respect for road workers and the consequences of unsafe driving. The Agency has followed this up with a publicity campaign across most of England, highlighting the important role drivers play in ensuring not only the safety of roadworkers, but that of fellow road users as well.

Accepting the award on behalf of RoWSaF, the Highways Agency’s Chief Highways Engineer Ginny Clarke said: “We're delighted that the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards have recognised the success of this cross-industry campaign. As a government agency we always strive to make our customers' journeys safer and more reliable, and to keep delays caused by roadworks to a minimum.

“Roadworkers do a difficult job. This campaign encourages drivers to give roadworkers the respect and consideration they deserve for working in the environment they do.”

The Respect Our Road Workers Campaign will now be put forward along with the other category winners to compete for the overall premier award, the winner of which will be announced in December.
