Scrappage scheme extension should lead to green investment

28th September 2009 Print
Leading green car guide, TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk cautiously welcomed the news that the scrappage scheme is to be extended.

Commenting, editor for the website, Faye Sunderland said: “While we remain sceptical over the green credentials of the scrappage scheme, there can be no doubt that it has been a major success in stimulating demand for new cars in what has been a difficult trading environment.”

“The very carmakers that will benefit from the extension, are the same companies that are required to invest in cutting average fleet CO2 emissions of 130g/km, the EU target for 2012 and we would hope to see this commitment honoured.

“We also hope that, should the scheme remain popular with the car buying public, this extension will see profits earned by the carmakers invested back into research and development on the next generation of low emission cars, many of which were recently showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Failure to invest will be a missed opportunity.”
