Lack of sleep linked with baby blues
A recent survey shows that only one third of new mums get help from their partners when baby wakes at night. Babies waking erratically throughout the night with teething pain can leave mums feeling sleep deprived during the day as they struggle to look after a tired, grizzly baby.Research shows that mums who suffer poor sleep are more likely suffer baby blues, so making sure mum gets adequate sleep is essential.
Here are some top tips on how to maintain good sleep patterns for you and baby during teething:
- Keep to your baby’s set sleep and nap times so they keep a consistent routine.
- Keep the room at around 18 degrees C so they do not get too hot or cold which can cause them to feel more distressed.
- Put your baby to bed when they are sleepy but not asleep so they are used to falling sleep in their cot when they wake during the night.
- When you baby wakes up do not turn the light on in the room to keep them feeling sleepy.
- Take turns to get up for baby with your partner so you both get equal sleep. If you find it hard to take turns during the night then alternate whole nights throughout the week. Single parents will find this difficult so try leaving baby for few minutes before attending to them to see if they settle themselves back down on their own.
- Often babies are clingy when teething so sleeping close to the cot may help reassure them.
- Try applying homeopathic teething granules such as Nelsons Teetha which will work in tune with your baby’s body to calm and soothe.
