Petrol guzzling 4x4’s go green
It’s no secret that the 4x4 sector has long been under fire for being excessive and unnecessary petrol guzzlers that are a menace to the environment and other road users. However, with improved modern engines being installed in the newer models, 4x4’s are now producing less pollution than their older counterparts, making them far more desirable than they have been. With used car values for this sector subsequently on the incline, HPI Valuations is urging those who want to own one of these cars, to buy sooner rather than later.
“The infamous ‘Chelsea Tractor’, has been slated by the green lobby over the last 12 months, and it stands accused of destroying the planet,” says Martin Keighley, HPI valuations expert. “However, prior to this demonisation, the 4x4 provided a reliable and bold-looking alternative to the people carrier, catering for both families and the style conscious alike. With greener versions now available, petrol models and other, more polluting models are getting left behind because environmentally conscious car-buyers can now purchase a 4x4 without it weighing on their conscience. As a result, demand for this sector is rising along with values, so buyers looking to own one shouldn’t leave it very long.”
“The BMW X6, Landrover Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport make up the top three on percentage of retained value,” continues Keighley. “However, when it comes to monthly depreciation, the Ssangyong Rexton, Nissan Pathfinder and Landrover Discovery 4 are best on value, making Landrover the top performer overall. However, the fact is that cars in this sector aren't the best value when it comes to depreciation, but you do get a lot of car for your money.”
“The 4x4’s are a very popular option for people in the city and the country alike, offering practicality, style and comfort,” concludes Keighley. “People who want to own and drive 4x4’s, should be able to do so without being vilified. Indeed, criticism of this sector has eased off and for the first time in a long time, driving one of these cars carries less of a stigma following the development of environmentally friendlier models.”
