The greener route to the white stuff

20th November 2009 Print

For skiers keen to minimise the impact on the environment of their journey to the slopes, coach travel accounts for the lowest CO2 emissions of any mode of motorised transport.

According to government statistics* on a journey of 100 miles, a car with one occupant will produce up to 41.4kg of CO2, a passenger on an aircraft 27.5kg, a passenger on a train 9.3kg, while a coach passenger accounts for just 4.8kg.

Research carried out in the US (buses.org/files/ComparativeEnergy.pdf) confirms these statistics: “Motor coaches use the least amount of energy and produce the lowest carbon dioxide emissions per passenger mile.”

Said Dan Fox, managing director of leading ski-by-coach operator, Skiweekends.com: “Not only is coach travel one of the most cost efficient ways of reaching ski resorts, the above reports prove that it’s also the least damaging to the environment.

“A coach uses less fuel than other transport so it’s not just greener, it’s also the cheapest way to get to the slopes in these recession-hit times.”
