moneysupermarket.com celebrates ten years of saving Brits money

8th December 2009 Print

Ten years ago today (8 December, 1999) marked a significant turning point for consumer choice and empowerment with the launch of moneysupermarket.com.

For the first time people could research every mortgage, credit card and personal loan available.  Ten years on, moneysupermarket.com has established itself as the number one comparison website, comparing more products across more channels than any other site. Moneysupermarket.com estimate that over the last ten years they have helped approximately 500 million visitors save money and this year alone  moneysupermarket.com customers are on track to rack up £400m+ of savings.

It is easy to forget that 10 years ago ‘shopping around' meant a walk down the high street or making call after call to providers.  Now customers can easily search a wide variety of products by using the comparison tools available on moneysupermarket.com, and make an informed decision, before buying with a simple click of a mouse.  For free and with no sales pressure.

Ian Williams, director of communications at moneysupermarket.com said: "moneysupermarket.com has prospered and made it from dot com start up to being a FTSE 250 listed business in 10 years because it is genuinely useful to customers.

"Before moneysupermarket.com, shopping around for financial products, for those that could be bothered, meant giving up a Saturday morning to tour branches or work your way through the Yellow Pages.  Today shopping around for financial and travel products is as quick and painless and millions of our customers have benefited by using our site to switch and save money.

"From the start we helped consumers compare mortgages, credit cards and personal loans, now, those products are just the tip of the iceberg. The moneysupermarket.com of 2009 has 27 channels and enables customers to search a vast range of products including general insurance products, savings and current accounts, utilities, mobiles and broadband, compare travel products through travelsupermarket.com and more recently shopping and vouchers.  Access to all of these products as well as content, such as video blogs, user guides and articles is free to everyone who visits."
