Confused.com: Boiler scrappage scheme

5th January 2010 Print

Gareth Kloet, Head of Utilities at Confused.com comments on today's announcement from the DECC regarding the kick-start to the boiler scrappage scheme in England.

Gareth Kloet says "This is a great scheme and one that should meet its three principle aims of reducing carbon, reducing wasted energy and safeguarding jobs - if there's a good take up.  It's also encouraging to see it being rolled out well ahead of schedule - and at a time when it is most needed. The National Grid has just issued a warning for people to ease up on fuel, for only the second time in 30 years, so the more people with fuel efficient boilers, the better."

Big energy suppliers such as Npower and British Gas are already offering to double the incentive and I'd expect the other big suppliers to follow suit, but customers need to be aware these may not be the best options available as your local plumber may be more cost effective.

The cost of a new boiler will vary considerably plus there are installation costs to add which can also vary depending on the location/accessibility and price of the installer's time, etc.  Anyone considering taking advantage of the boiler scrappage scheme should resist being bamboozled by headline offers.  Instead it's vital to shop around and consider the total cost of both the replacement boiler and associated installation costs.
