Pet insurance doesn’t need to come with a pedigree price tag

New plans announced could see several changes being made which could impact all dog owners in the UK following a review of The Dangerous Dog Act.

Suggested changes include: compulsory micro chipping of dogs ensuring the owner and dog is traceable, extending the dangerous dogs act to cover all places including private property and introducing compulsory third party insurance so that victims of dog attacks are financially compensated.

Darren Black, Head of Pet Insurance at Confused.com said: "The decision to review the dangerous dog act comes in response to well documented, fatal dog attacks.

"Pet insurance is something that should always be factored into the cost of owning a dog. It provides financial security for owners with sick animals and also could include elements of the proposed requirements such as third party cover.

Today's announcements however have come as a concern for some - in particular animal charities. Many may question if this is a step too far which could contribute to a rise in abandoned animals.

For those who are concerned with footing the bill for insurance Black continued: "The cost of pet insurance should not be a deal breaker in the decision of buying a pet. By shopping around and using price comparison sites, policies can be found for very little money. Once insurance is in place, pet owners can avoid the chance of making a claim by ensuring their pet leads a healthy life where all of their physical and environmental needs are met."
