There’s always plenty of information around for people buying their first home but little for those looking to clock up their first miles in their own car.

So south coast automotive company the Hendy Group has produced its own guide to help first time car buyers in Exeter through the motoring maze.

“Buying your first car is a huge step for many young people and we know that it can seem confusing,’’ said Hendy Group managing director Paul Hendy. “So we have produced these key areas for people to consider which put them firmly in the driving seat when it comes to making the right decisions.’’

New or second hand? Young drivers in particular might usually think second hand but with the financial options around a new car might be more economical in the long term – and regular monthly instalments mean you can budget for your motoring. Check your local dealer for the very latest offers and ask them to provide comparisons between new and second hand. It’s important to keep an open mind.

Finance. Potentially the biggest indicator of what you will have as your first car. Put yourself in the very best position possible to make your motoring affordable.

Consider taking the Pass Plus test which not only gives you valuable tuition including on motorways and at night but can also reduce insurance premiums.

Save a deposit. Some manufacturers are offering great zero per cent finance on new cars but if you opt for second hand a good deposit might make all the difference when it comes to options.

Look at road tax costs – a brand new Ford Ka for example is just £35 a year – but less efficient cars can be hundreds of pounds.

Fuel economy – ensure you are aware of expected consumption to help budget for everyday costs.

Car type. Think about the type of motoring you are planning and with costs in mind choose accordingly. If you are expecting to be taking friends out regularly five doors might be more appropriate than three and if you and friends have lots of gear a tiny city car is going to struggle to cope. The sheer choice of different cars on garage forecourts can make the decision difficult but study what dealers have available, what fits into your lifestyle, whether you have a suitable overnight parking spot and what feels comfortable to drive.

“There is so much for a new driver to consider but we hope that we can help with some of that preparation work,’’ said Mr Hendy. “And then motorists can enjoy owning their first car.’’

The Hendy Group operates Ford, Mazda, Kia and Honda dealerships throughout the south together with offering an extensive selection of second hand vehicles. Current deals are on the group website at hendy.co.uk.
