Sat-Nav the new "must-have" item for car thieves
Drivers who have satellite navigation systems stolen from their vehicles are being left out of pocket because their insurance cover won’t stretch to such high ticket items. The hi-tech devices have this year taken pole position as the fashionable target for car thieves because they are easy to snatch and conceal as a criminal makes off.
But many motorists who think they can claim back the loss on their car insurance are being caught out by policies which only offer limited cover for items stolen from inside the car.
Often only up to £100 can be claimed, yet most of the systems available on the market cost at least double that.
"We have noticed a significant rise in the number of people contacting us who have had their car broken into and their sat-nav system stolen," said Tony Allen, Chief Executive of The A & A Group.
"Often though typical policies only cover theft from the vehicle up to £100.
"If you have expensive electronic or audio equipment in the car, there are special policies available that add only a little to the premium but can cover the item if it is stolen. Drivers should always remember to talk to their insurer when carrying anything like this in their vehicle.
"The Allen & Allen Group looks at every case individually so rather than simply adding on a standard amount for any such additional cover, we will shop around for the best deal to suit the specific driver.
"Whenever possible, sat-nav systems should not be left in the vehicle. If you can’t take it with you, the device plus all wires and any cradle should be hidden well out of site.
"And it is particularly important at this time of year to ensure windows are closed and doors are locked. The warmer weather means it is peak season for opportunist thieves."
The A & A Group can offer policies which cover higher value thefts from vehicles and will do its best to process any claims as quickly as possible.
