Kuala Lumpur tops list of cheapest holiday destinations

18th March 2010 Print

As the pound slumps against the Euro and most other major currencies and consumers counting their pennies more than ever, it's unfortunate that some of our popular holiday destinations are set to be even more expensive this summer.

STA Travel has therefore scoured the globe and quizzed travellers and travel consultants to find the best value for money destinations around the world. Based on the main ingredients for a good holiday - a pint of beer, a meal in a local restaurant, a night in a hostel, a bus ride and a sight-seeing bus tour around the city - STA Travel confirms that Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia tops the list for cheapest destination, coming in at a grand total of £13.09, followed closely by Hanoi, in Vietnam.

The top 8 cheap destinations are as follows (based on totalling the typical price for a pint of beer, a meal in a local restaurant, a night in a hostel, a bus ride and a sight-seeing tour):

1. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: £13.09
2. Hanoi, Vietnam: £18.29
3. Seoul, South Korea: £18.38
4. Mexico City, Mexico: £22.84
5. Beijing, China: £24.82
6. Istanbul,Turkey: £27.38
7. Bangkok, Thailand: £27.40
8. Cape Town, South Africa: £31.68

John Constable, Group Managing Director at STA Travel says:

"With the Eurozone set to be one of the most expensive regions in which to holiday, Brits will need to look further afield to secure a bargain whilst away and make their pound go further. Asia has always been a good bet, and clearly still holds up. But it's interesting that South Africa makes the list - with the World Cup there this summer, it's another great reason for footy fans to take advantage of travelling to such a great destination, especially with the deals on offer."
