The countdown to the end of tax year is on
The tax year ends at midnight on April 5 and you have until that time to use this year's ISA allowance. However, with April 5 falling over the Easter weekend this year, in practice the deadline for some ISA accounts will be earlier.
If you are planning to open an ISA this year but have yet to do so, there is still time but you will need to check when the application cut-off depending on how you apply, as this will vary - particularly if you want to open a cash ISA.
Getting organised
Firstly, check your savings balance and make sure, if you have to, you've given enough notice for withdrawals without landing any penalties. You can invest up to £7,200 in total - £3,600 in a cash ISA and the remainder in a stocks and shares ISA (alternatively, the full £7,200 can be invested in a stocks and shares ISA). Customers born before 5 April 1960 can invest up to £10,200 in total, with a maximum of £5,100 into cash.
Branch-based applications
Some of our branches are accepting cash ISA applications in branches until the close of business on Thursday (1st). Some will be open on Saturday, giving you a bit longer to get your application in.
Always check first and don't leave it too late - call into your local branch as soon as possible as branches are likely to be very busy in the final weeks leading up to the end of the tax year. Be prepared however, as in some cases, you may have to wait or make an appointment.
Get Online
Applying online is a good way of avoiding any possible queues in branches. We will accept online applications for cash and stocks and shares ISAs up until midnight on the 5th April. (hsbc.co.uk)
By phone
If you're applying by phone then applications need to be completed by 10:00PM on 5th April. The advice is clear, if you want to apply over the phone, the sooner you do so, the better. Phone lines may businer than usual as the tax year comes to an end, so expect above average waiting periods and ensure you have all your correct documentation to hand.
Applying by Post
Applications by post are not accepted at any late stage and you'll need to have your application form posted back to an HSBC branch by 1st April.
