Springtime in Copenhagen
What makes Copenhageners know that spring has arrived? Simple, it is on the 15 April when the much loved Tivoli Gardens opens its door for a new summer season.
This is Denmark’s most popular tourist attraction and it has remained a magical universe since it opened back in 1843. It renews itself each year with new rides or attractions and this year it is the Danish children’s favourite ‘Petzi’ character that will take centre stage. This is truly a both day, as well as evening time venue for all ages, as the many types of entertainment on offers appeals to a wide audience.
The many restaurants within Tivoli serve good food to suit every pocket, from hot-dog stands to Michelin star experiences. Stunning flower arrangements are on display and the sounds from a variety of musical events are always an attraction, which can be anything from classical to rock. But most of all, this is a very romantic place to stroll through in the evening, when thousands of fairly lights give out their magical glow. Cheers! Copenhagen Beer Festival 6 - 8 May
Copenhageners know what makes a good beer. This annual event has attracted beer lovers since 2002 and this year it will be held in probably the best brewery in the world…..at Carlsberg.
It is open to anyone wanting to learn more about beer and beer making, taste new brews or just want to do something out of the ordinary. Creativity, imagination and passion are what make a good beer and in addition to the local Carlsberg you will be able to try dessert beer, fruit beer and even beer with whipped cream. The Danish Beer Enthusiasts expect to present more than 800 beers from around 70 exhibitors, including both Danish and international brewers. Love to Samba? The Copenhagen Carnival 21 - 23 May
This colourful tradition has run for 28 years and it seems to get bigger and bigger each time. Danes can be very warm blooded and this is the time they show it! The popular electronic carnival will be repeated as will the kids’ own events like making their own colourful streamers and of course dance along to the fantastic sounds. New for 2010 will be a reggae stage and a dance dome. Most of the fun takes place in the Faelledparken Park but the highlight, the big Samba Parade moves right through the city centre. Clubbing it? Distortion Festival 2 - 6 June
This is Copenhagen’s most vibrant and impulsive festival, where local and international icons of street and club culture are invited to host one party each. There are no frames, no boundaries and it’s aiming to be the ultimate city event.
During the five day long extravaganza of electronic and underground beats, the different neighbourhoods of Copenhagen battle it out to set out the craziest and most intense party experience. Think green party buses, fire truck concerts and street gay weddings. Do as the Danes - Traditional Sankt Hans Eve 23 June
This ancient celebration of the year’s longest day takes its various forms all over Scandinavia. In Copenhagen young and old gathers in the evening around huge bonfires to meet, have fun and to sing the traditional Midsummer songs. This happens on beaches, in harbours and open spaces all over the city.
