A vision of love

31st March 2010 Print

They say love is blind, and according to a new study released today, the age-old adage could well be true.

Among 1,000 loved-up couples, one-in-three grooms, a staggering 24,000 men* a year, can’t see their brid - or anything else for that matter, on their big day, because they’re too vain to wear their glasses!

The study was commissioned by laser eye specialist Ultralase, as part of its research into wedding preparations. Perhaps unsurprisingly, looking good for the photo emerged as a bride’s single biggest worry on their big day (33%), but more shocking is that it came above their partner failing to turning up to the ceremony (18%).

However, any beauty anxiety could be a waste of time as the study revealed one-in-three grooms chose to forgo glasses and contacts altogether during their wedding and make do with poor eyesight! The majority cited vanity and convenience for this, while a flustered few who did wear their glasses (5%) suffered fogged up lenses during the vows!

Whilst looking good is obviously important for the whole wedding party, brides and brides-to-be revealed their top five fashion no-no’s for their big day:

Trouser suit (38%)
Glasses (23%)
Support knickers (16%)
Flat shoes (12%)
White tights/ stockings (10%)

For grooms, the top five fashion faux pas getting the thumbs down emerged as:

Wig/ toupee (50%)
Visual piercings (19%)
White socks (13%)
Facial hair (10%)
Glasses (7%)

Jon Hughes, Commercial Director of Ultralase, said: “The research is fascinating although quite shocking – brides and grooms don’t have to forgo seeing their loved ones on the big day just because they don’t want to wear their glasses or contacts. There are options.

“Over the last six-months, we have experienced an ever-increasing number of couples requesting laser eye treatment prior to their wedding day which is why we commissioned this study. We just hope that this trend will continue so we can help more brides and grooms to actually see one another on their big day, honeymoon and throughout their new life together.”
