Affordable luxury travel for all the family

Getting closer to nature

Families in search of a luxury summer holiday should ride the range in 2010, as Ranch Rider has three sensational deals in British Columbia, with savings of up to £4,000 for a family of five.

Appealing to parents with a green streak, the solar powered Siwash Lake Guest Ranch has already won several responsible accolades. Recently voted as one of Canada’s most eco-friendly homesteads, the property offers dream riding holidays “that won’t cost the earth”. Despite the encouraging deals on offer from Ranch Rider, guests can take that last statement literally, as the “off grid” ranch even features a “green basics” talk for new visitors and an aptly titled “Free Range” kids club during the summer.

Situated in the remote Cariboo Chilcotin Coast region, the ranch might think small when it comes to footprints, but the opposite is true for creature comforts. On a par with an English country estate, each room features plush robes, Egyptian linens and elegant antiques, the scent of aromatherapy oils hanging in the air. Small parties of six can ride out together; natural horsemanship, nature hiking and mountain biking also included in the package. Forget your hearty western fare as at the Siwash it’s gourmet all the way, evening hors' d'oeuvres & three-course dinners rounding off a day in the saddle.

The 5-night “Open Range” adventure costs £5,995 (Save £3,000) and the 7-night “Wilderness Explorer” holiday costs £9,659 (Save £4,000) including, full board accommodation, ranch activities gratuities and taxes. Both stays are based on two adults and three children. Departures 25 June-15 July and 23 August-05 September. Excludes transfers, as car hire recommended and return flight from £615pp.

The Elkin Creek is a favourite with families who want to experience the cultural side of Canada. The native Xeni Gwet’in First Nation tribe make up 50% of the ranch hands and there are also village visits and trails rides covering spiritual places of interest.

Out of the saddle guests can enjoy windsurfing, paddle boating, river kayaking, hiking and fly-fishing, but the world famous Wild Horses of Brittany Triangle are still the main draw card for visitors. For every two adults travelling in August one child goes free (Save £715). £1,145pp (based on two adults sharing) including, full board accommodation, ranch activities and taxes. Excludes gratuities as left to guests' discretion, car hire from £336 and return flight from £859pp. Deal available on all August departures.

All prices subject to availability.
