Grove Village youngsters show off their design skills

Youngsters from Grove Village in Manchester have proved to be budding interior designers and helped to inspire the latest show homes by developer Gleeson.
Members of the Grove Village Junior Project Team and after-school Homework Club got out their pens, paper and paints to design their perfect bedroom.
The winning entry by 11-year-old Kealey Thornley featured a colourful ‘sealife’ mural and will now be incorporated into one of Gleeson’s new show homes at Grove Village.
Second prize went to Nicola Hewitson, aged 14, who created a very contemporary ‘designer’ bedroom, while nine-year-old Georja Mullock earned third prize for her inventiveness in creating a three-dimensional entry in a shoebox.
All three received ‘Toys R Us’ vouchers for their efforts.
Sarah Humphries, sales manager for Gleeson Homes, one of the partners delivering this award winning, inner city, housing regeneration programme, said: “The standard of entries was amazing and it was really difficult to pick a winner. Kealey’s design will look fantastic in our new show home, which we are due to unveil in May.”
Helping Sarah to judge the entries were chairman of Grove Village Tenants & Residents Association David Tomlinson and neighbourhood regeneration officer Jane Hawthorne, of Harvest Housing, who are working with Gleeson to create a modern, mixed-tenure urban village in the Ardwick area of Manchester.
Said Jane: “Having the support of Gleeson for projects like this is great for developing relationships and encouraging community spirit.”
The Grove Village Junior Project Team is made up of young volunteers aged seven to 13, who undertake environmental work in the area such as bulb planting, while the Homework Club provides access to computers and a safe environment for youngsters to complete their homework.
