Volcanic ash chaos prompts camper van holiday boom

The recent travel disruption caused by the eruption of the Icelandic volcano, Eyjafjallajökull is tempting increasing numbers of British holidaymakers to look closer to home for their next trip.

Those left out of pocket by extended stays and hefty return air fares are looking for a cheaper alternative for their summer break and one which puts them in the driving seat, rather than their airline.

This, together with the uncertainty over how the population will be affected financially after the General Election, means that camper van hire is seeing a resurgence.

Long the preserve of the festival go-er or surf-addict, camper vans are proving to be a big hit this year with families, couples and groups looking for a cost-effective and flexible way to spend their valuable holidays.

James White, owner of We Hire Campers based in Hampshire said; "We are receiving more enquiries from people looking for something a bit different this year and who don’t want to be worrying about the cost or inflexibility that travelling abroad carries. We’ve seen visitor numbers to our website double within the last four weeks alone.

"You can hire a camper for as little as £60 a day and can be on the road immediately. There is no need to check-in hours before your flight and there are no annoying baggage limits. You can bring everything that you need".

In fact, We Hire Campers offers holidaymakers the chance to hire cycle racks and an awning, to increase the storage and accommodation space if required.

We Hire Campers is a family-run business offering the hire of ‘Bert’ – a Mazda Bongo, any day of the week (subject to availability). "We are not governed by scheduled flights" said James. "We can fit in with your requirements. The last thing you need is hassle on your holiday".

‘Bert’ is a four wheel drive Mazda Bongo that can sleep up to four. He comes with a brand new kitchenette (including stove and fridge), dining area and storage space.

He is still available for selected dates in 2010 and there is a 20 per cent discount for earlybirds wanting to book for 2011.
