Covent Garden to host special opera performance

30th April 2010 Print

On Wednesday 12th May 2010, enjoy The Lovely Ladies, a delightful new one-act opera, proudly sponsored by Covent Garden London, the capital’s home of performing arts.

British composer Peter Cowdrey and librettist Hamish Robinson created this witty opera based on the wine diaries of Michael Broadbent, the celebrated critic who started wine auctions at Christie’s. All profits from this special Gala performance, which will be an annual event, will go to Maggie’s Caring Cancer Centres.

As one of London’s most important cultural districts, Covent Garden is an area synonymous with performance and musical heritage. The decision to sponsor ‘Lovely Ladies’ follows the success of other charity events, including ‘Music for Mums’ in support of Marie Curie Cancer Care and Superbusking, which saw talents such as the Stereophonics and Jamie Cullum perform live secret gigs in the Market Building last December in aid of the charity Crisis.

Bev Churchill commented, “Covent Garden London is proud to support this special one-off performance of The Lovely Ladies, in aid of Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres. As the home of opera and performance in the West End, Covent Garden sends its best wishes to all involved with this very worthwhile cause.”
