Knight Rider's 'KITT still sets the nation's heart racing

14th September 2006 Print
It may be twenty years since it last graced our screens, but Knight Rider's KITT has been voted the nation's favourite fictional car, in a poll conducted by Lloyds TSB Insurance.

Proof that nostalgia definitely isn't a thing of the past, the car topped a list of cars from 70's and 80s TV and cinema. KITT notched up more than a fifth of votes (21 per cent), beating tough competition to the finishing line.

The full list of cars was as follows:

KITT
The Italian Job Mini
Herbie
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Back to the Future Delorean
Bat Mobile
Pink Peril (Thunderbirds)
General Lee (Dukes of Hazzard)
James Bond's Aston Martin
Del Boy's Reliant Robin

Phil Loney, managing director, Lloyds TSB Insurance said: "Two decades on and the cars of 2006 still don't have personalities or protect their owners from all forms of danger, so it's easy to understand why KITT had such an effect on the nation.

"Michael Knight will have been the first to admit that when a car can actually talk it makes forming a relationship that bit easier, but all the same, Brits don't seem to have too much trouble falling in love with their vehicles. The fact that we still have a soft spot for cars like KITT says a lot about how much we value our own motors".
