England football fans fly the flag this summer

Over a fifth (22%) of England fans will add a St George's flag to the family car this month to show their support to the team in South Africa, according to a new survey by M&S Car Insurance.

The England team is due to play their first match against the USA this weekend, and fans across the country will be flying the flag from their cars. About as many women are planning to add a flag to their car as men - 21% of women compared to 24% of men.

Most fans who are placing a flag on their car will be looking to attach it to the antenna (56%), 17% will place it by the passenger side wing mirror and 13% will place it in the front windscreen.

M&S Car Insurance is advising motorists to put safety first and think carefully about where they put the flag on their vehicle. The survey revealed that 43% of respondents believe flags can be a distraction depending upon where they are placed on the car.

Andrew Ferguson, M&S Head of General Insurance, said: "Many motorists and their families will be keen to demonstrate their support for England by placing a flag on their car. While it can be a popular way for fans to show their support, we are asking motorists to be aware of the safety issues to ensure they avoid any unnecessary accidents on the road."

M&S Car Insurance tips for driving safely during the World Cup:

Be sure not to place flags on any part of your car where they can obstruct the driver's view

When attaching flags, make sure they are completely secure

If undertaking a long motorway journey involving higher speeds, take the flag off until the destination is reached

If placing the flag on the antenna of the car be aware that this will alter the height of the vehicle when driving

If placing the flag onto a window, ensure it is taken off when the car is parked as this could make it easier for thieves to break into the car.

If you'd like to show your support this summer, head to M&S where you'll find anything from the official England FA car flags (£1.50) to football barbecues, bikinis and much more.
